The sale is part of a program at Maine Audubon known as “Bringing Nature Home”, a program that aims to support local ecosystems through the planting of native trees, shrubs, and ferns across Maine
The sale also provided educational information about each native plant, including growing information and their necessary benefits for both people and local wildlife, all the while being beautiful new additions to backyard homes.
“The plants we have here today are a lot of plants that work really well in some of the places we live and in our backyard environments, whether that’s the herbaceous plants we have like swamp milkweed or wild bergamot, Virginia mountain mint, these are all plants that have important relationships with insects that we’re trying to support whether it’s pollinators or caterpillars that are important food sources for birds and there’s certain attributes of native plants that support wildlife in ways that non native plants just can’t,” said Andrew Tufts, program manager for Fields Pond Audubon.
Native plants can be purchased online or picked up directly from the Fields Pond Audubon Center.
